How "In the Box" Ad Copy is Stopping YOUR Sales Cold
© 2003 Harmony Major
In using a search engine to find a fix for an answer to a site design dilemma, I ran across... "How to create XHTML Family modules and markup languages for fun and profit!" Umm ... I beg yer pardon? Forget PROFIT -- I don't even know what that MEANS. And "fun"? Uh-huh. RIGHT. This is what you get when you mix an overzealous site owner with a jones for headline generators, and 5 minutes or so of free time. The Cold Hard Truth...
In the spirit of "lazy money", you're not going to like this message. Heck, I don't even like it -- but that doesn't stop it from being true.
What's the key to creating powerful, sales-generating ad copy that produces the most income? What's the secret to creating sales letters and ads that persuade your prospects to buy? What's the one crucial component YOU need to get the most out of your ads and sales letters, to REALLY spark sales?
The answer to all three is... ACTUAL KNOWLEDGE of *HOW* to write sales copy that sells.
There is NO getting around this.
You can buy all the fancy-schmancy sales letter generators your hard drive can comfortably hold, but if your copywriting skills still suck, well ... all is quite likely lost. It's usually painfully obvious which sales letters have been created with these things. Case in point, I don't think I'll be able to stomach seeing one more of these phrases on a website without taking up baseball-batting as a contact sport: "I asked at least ten of my friends, and they all told me I should be charging TWICE what..."
(Umm ... yeah, whatever.)
"Click here to order now, whether it's 5PM or 2AM ***in the morning***..."
(Can we say RE-DUN-DAN-CY? And how many ZILLIONS of websites are using that "exact same" phrase? Pu-leez.)
"I don't know how long I can afford to offer this for such an amazing price. The next time you come back..."
(Uh-huh. And CD-ROMs grow on trees.)
Why "Canned" Sales Copy Can Kill Your Response
A headline template, ad template, or -- Heaven forbid -- sales letter "template" is not the be all and end all of your copywriting needs. Just because you have a gigantic list of "power words" to use in your Web copy and are armed with a template for a sales letter does NOT mean that you know how to make your site SELL. You have to know how to rub that ad the right way ... to use the right combination of words and phrases -- not to mention the solid benefits of your product -- to create a winning ad that's actually going to *snag the sale*. Or signup. Or whatever.
Any ol' schmoe can go about slapping "ad words" together in a feeble ATTEMPT to excite the reader. But it takes skill to actually do it -- and to do it RIGHT. Yes, headline, ad, and sales letter creator templates and software can help you create powerful sales copy. Heck, a lot of 'em can make it darn easy. But you'll be hard pressed to find *any* "machine" that actually reduces your workload to ZERO.
Did you catch that?
You have to know how ads are supposed to "feel", (meaning knowing when the flow is off kilter), to truly be able to create ads that sell. Some of that skill is second nature and some is learned, but ALL of it is needed to create the best possible ads for your product or service.
"So Should I Toss My New Sales Letter Generator?"
Heck no. It's about knowing the craft, that's all.
Sure, you might DRIVE your car just fine, but each and every time it breaks, you have to go to a mechanic to fix it. I'm not telling you to be that mechanic. (It took years for them to be as good as they are.) Just know enough about the most critical parts of your business to be able to fix and attend to your "car" when it breaks. It'll cost you a little time and money at first, but it'll save you loads more than you'll have spent, in the long-term.
So get started studying up on how to write killer copy, THEN go out and put that headline creator or sales letter generator to use. Your bank account will thank you for it. (Well okay -- maybe I'm being a little cliché-ish myself here, but you'll surely thank ME for it ... and isn't that just as good? ;))
